My regular rides

Sunday – 6am-ers Sunday Hit-out

I’ve been a member of the 6am-ers since 2004 where the main hit-out is Sunday mornings.  This ride will nearly always be hilly; exploring the mountains of Melbourne’s east and north.  Anyone is welcome and can determine the route by monitoring the 6am-er website or following @6amers on Twitter.

Tuesday – 6am-ers Port Philip Bay Hurt-Box

Every Tuesday a group of 6am-ers head down to follow the Nepean Highway through Beach Road loop into the city before work.   This is 70ks for me with about 40ks of smooth rolling turns which gradually become harder and faster the closer we get to town.  I love this ride; it’s always a great work-out and the coffee and toast to follow is always good fun assisted by the gazillion endorphins flying around the room.

Wednesday – North Road Long or Fatties MTB group (depending on weather and time of year)

Long North Road – I meet the North Road Bunch at North and Nepean and head down for the Two-Bays loop and back into the city.  A hard, fast and now large group assists me with 110+k before settling into the office by 9ish.

Fatties – The Fat Tyre Flyers MTB club started this ride from Eaglemont Scout Hall many years ago.  Although not formally associated witht the FTF these days this group is still a dedicated group of mountain bikers who love the Melbourne trails of the Yarra River and surrounds.  Alternating in (to city) or out (towards Westerfolds), the ride is always an absolute ball and fantastic for both skills development and fitness.

Other days of the week I like to mix up my favourites on the road or on the trails:

  • Hoot of a commute – is my mountain bike commuting route to or from work.  It’s hardly your normal ‘commute’.  I am able to link technical dirt trails all the way in or out and only need to ride very few kilometres of sealed road.  I also throw a few different loops in here and there dependent on time.  I doubt anyone has a real appreciation of what I mean when i say, “I rode the mountain bike to work today.”
  • Lower Plenty / Mount Pleasant Road commute – often my extended commute in or out from work depending on time.  I love the views and atmosphere of the north-eastern suburbs of Melbourne and it’s always a pleasant way to start or finish the day.
